Air Fryer Hot Cross Buns

Cook Time: 25 - 30 minutes

What you need

  • 500g Odlums strong flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 75g caster sugar
  • 10g salt
  • 325ml milk
  • 1 free-range egg, beaten
  • 100g of dark chocolate chips
  • 10g fast-action dried yeast

To finish

  • Golden syrup
  • Equal amounts of flour and water are mixed into a paste and placed into a piping bag

Recipe Steps

  1. Put the flour and sugar into a large bowl and mix them together.
  2. Then add the salt and yeast, placing them on opposite sides of the bowl so the salt doesn’t kill the yeast.
  3. Add the milk to the dry ingredients. Add the egg and knead in a stand mixer with a dough hook for 10 mins.
  4. Leave the dough in the mixing bowl and cover it with cling film for one hour to prove.
  5. Once proved, knock back the dough punching all the air out.  Now incorporate the chocolate by kneading them into the dough.
  6. Roll the dough into a sausage shape and cut into 8 even shapes.  
Roll the dough into 8 balls and lay them into the basket of your Airfryer. Cover once again with cling film and leave to prove for a further 20-30mins.
  7. When the buns have risen, pipe a cross on each bun with the water and flour mixture.
  8. Bake for 25-30 mins at 190C until nicely browned. As soon as they come out of the brush with golden syrup and let cool before tucking in.
